In addition, the minister will push to have the federal government ratify two international treaties that protect the ownership of copyright materials.
Heritage minister Helene Schrerrer declares that she will table legislation to crack down on music downloading. How predictable. And pathetic. Apparently, she was 'motivated' by discussions she had at the Junos with Canadian music industry officials. Hello. On a day when a poll is released that shows the Liberals continuing to lose ground, this isn't exactly the smartest thing to put out there. You're supposed to represent the people, not the spoiled brats in the music industry. Bitch.
The CRIA filed an appeal today of the ruling making file sharing legal.
It is becoming apparent that stopping file sharing may be technologically impossible. It is the nature of the Internet. Legal challenges effectively shut down Napster in 2002, so it's demonstrably possible to stop centrally controlled digital-music piracy through legal means. However, stopping peer-to-peer distribution may not be possible by technical or legal means.
That quote is from the Heritage Canada site. So they're going to enact legislation that they realize from the get-go is doomed to failure. What an incredible waste of time. The music industry will get their 29 sacrificial lambs, and it won't change a damn thing.
